Mutlimodal Learning through Storyboards and Podcasts

 Multimodal Learning through Storyboards

and Podcasts

Learning is a dynamic process unique to each learner because everyone has their own personal learning style. The way in which one learns does not fit one margin but many representations and modalities must be utilized for meaningful learning to occur. One can not be expected to learn the same way every time or with the same materials or resources. Many learners need their learning to be represented using distinct methods that differ from traditional methods such as textbooks and paper/pencil. This is where schools and educators must integrate innovative learning tools and techniques to meet the unique learning styles of all students. The use of the instructional design of interactive media such as storyboarding and podcasts holds various benefits in creating meaningful learning experiences.

Storyboarding

Storyboarding is a structured planning process where students create a visual sequence of how a story/multimedia product will unfold. It can be used by educators as a formative assessment strategy prior to the creation of a multimedia task. If you don’t have a stable structure in place when you begin creating your eLearning deliverables, every aspect of your eLearning course will suffer as a result. This is why an effective storyboard is such a vital tool for eLearning professionals (Pappas, 2015). In education, storyboarding can benefit many aspects of instruction and learning. The storyboard teaching strategy helps students keep track of a narrative's main ideas and supporting details by having them illustrate the story's important scenes. Storyboarding can be used when texts are read aloud or when students read independently. The main purpose of the storyboard is to offer a simple visual representation of what you want to teach in the classroom in a step-wise fashion. Special software can be used to create good storyboards, which are a powerful way to visually present information. The linear direction of the cells is perfect for storytelling, explaining a process, and showing the passage of time. At their core, storyboards are a set of sequential drawings that tell a story with key points (Sherman, 2023).

Podcasts

Educational podcasts are appealing and may encourage students who benefit from this mode of learning. Podcasts can help students practice their listening skills and auditory learning styles. Teachers can record audio podcasts to provide additional material for students to review. Students can also create their own podcasts to share their learning experiences. Podcasts can easily be used in schools, universities, or colleges to engage students and improve teaching and learning practices (Gray, 2022).  Podcasts allow students to practice their listening comprehension of complex texts that are both conversational and formal, and the corresponding transcripts enable students to confirm their success. According to Gray (2022), the following are the benefits of using podcasts to create meaningful learning experiences :

  1. Flexible Learning & Availability – 24 Hours a Day

  2. Students Listen Longer Than They’ll Watch or Read

  3. Student Created Content

  4. Voice Recording Technology

All in all, storyboarding and podcasts can have meaningful impacts on various learning styles across many different demographics. We all need to plan for something, whether it be at work, school, or home. Storyboarding out your desired outcome, even in a very simplified manner, helps you prepare for potential issues, make sure your plan is sound, and/or communicate ideas with others  (Sherman, 2023). Equally as impactful to learners are podcasts because they provide another mode of learning medium. Podcasting, as one of the latest mediums to emerge into the mainstream, is one of the forefront technologies (Gray, 2022).
